Quest Pro 2 reported to ship in 2025 with LG as hardware partner
According to a new report, the Quest Pro 2 is set to launch in the first half of 2025 in partnership with LG.
Korea Economic Daily reports that Mark Zuckerberg will meet with LG Electronics CEO William Cho in South Korea on February 28 to discuss details of the partnership, including the joint development of a mixed reality headset to be released in the first half of 2025.
The news site writes that the companies are forming an "AI & Metaverse alliance," which includes plans to incorporate Meta's AI technology into LG products. It's been ten years since Zuckerberg visited Korea, so the meeting is significant. The partnership could be announced on Wednesday.
According to the report, LG will contribute the hardware part and Meta will contribute the software and AI technology, with LG's smart device operating system "WebOS" to be implemented in the headset.
Back in September, a South Korean tech blog reported that a new Quest Pro headset was planned for 2025, to be developed in collaboration with LG Electronics and costing around $2,000.
While the rumors about a meeting on Wednesday and a far-reaching partnership with LG are credible, the reports about the division of tasks should still be taken with a grain of salt. Meta is likely to have a major influence on the hardware design and will use its own Android-based XR operating system instead of WebOS.
A hardware partnership would be nothing new for Meta, which has worked with Samsung (GearVR), Xiaomi (Oculus Go), and Lenovo (Oculus Rift S) in the past.
With the Quest Pro 2, Meta will launch a competitor to the Vision Pro as well as the upcoming mixed reality headset from Samsung and Google. According to a report, the latter will be released at the end of 2024, with an initial production run of only 30,000 units.
