Sony remains silent on Playstation VR 2 sales figures
Sony hasn't given an update on sales figures for the Playstation VR 2 in a long time, and that doesn't bode well for the product.
Sony has released its financial results for the third quarter ending December 31, 2023, which includes the most of the holiday season.
The company sold 8.2 million PS5s in the third quarter. There is no mention of how Playstation VR 2 performed during the holiday season.
Sony has only released sales figures for the Playstation VR 2 once, back in May 2023, when Sony announced that the headset had sold nearly 600,000 units in its first six weeks, slightly outperforming the first Playstation VR in the same period.
There could be an update for the VR headset's first anniversary on February 22. Or when Sony announces its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2023. Sony's fourth quarter ends on March 31, 2024.
A difficult first year for Playstation VR 2
We can only speculate about the sales numbers, but an analysis of Amazon US sales figures suggests that Meta Quest massively outsold PSVR 2 on Amazon over the holiday season. For every 1 unit of PSVR 2 sold, Quest sold more than 30 units reported Road to VR. Of course, Sony's VR system is not only sold through Amazon US, but the data shows an important trend.
The first year of the Playstation VR 2 was a bumpy one. Some bigger titles were released in a bad state, including the exclusive shooter Firewall Ultra. By the end of the year, the studio behind the game, which was supported by Sony until then, shut down. Other studios reported that development for PSVR 2 was fraught with hurdles and that foveated rendering, considered one of the headset's strongest features, is difficult to implement in VR games.
At this point, we don't even know if Playstation VR 2 is selling better or worse than the original headset. But Sony's continued silence isn't a good sign. The last time Sony commented on Playstation VR 2, the system was described as a "challenging category".
