Quest 3 is now the 3rd most used VR headset on Steam
Quest 3 is getting off to a similarly strong start with PC VR users as Quest 2 did back at its launch, and is hot on the heels of the Valve Index.
Quest 3 gained another 4.78 percent share in January and is now the third most used SteamVR headset with 14.05 percent after just three months. It gained a 5.05 percent share in November and a 3.94 percent share in December.
This means that Quest 3 is getting off to a similarly strong start with PC VR users as Quest 2 did back in 2020, when it achieved a 17.40 percent in just three months. This is an amazing success considering the much higher price of Quest 3 ($499 at launch) compared to Quest 2 ($299 at launch).
Quest 2 also made significant gains, increasing its share by 2.77 percent. Meta's headsets now account for more than 68 percent, or more than two-thirds, of all PC VR headsets used on Steam. Meta's rise comes at the expense of the Valve index, which lost more than 3 percent of percent share. The Oculus Rift S also lost percentage share. It can be assumed that many users of these older VR headsets (both released in 2019) have switched to a Quest 3 in recent months.
SteamVR users as a percentage of the total Steam user base grew by 0.40% in January and now stands at 2.24%. The growth in recent months can be attributed to three factors: the release of Steam Link for Meta Quest, the launch of Quest 3 and the introduction of UEVR, a universal PC VR mod, which makes most Unreal Engine titles playable in VR.
Valve's monthly Steam hardware & software survey tracks all VR headsets that have been used with a PC and Steam in the past month and whose users participated in the survey. From this, conclusions can be drawn about the relative distribution of PC VR headsets among each other, and their market success. However, the survey does not track other non-SteamVR powered platforms, such as Playstation VR 2, or standalone devices that are not used with a PC.
Quest headsets can be used wirelessly on a PC via Air Link, Virtual Desktop and, most recently, Steam Link.
