Apple & Disney bring immersive sports & movies to Vision Pro VR/AR headset
Disney Plus is coming to Apple Vision Pro. In addition to movies and shows, new immersive experiences are coming to the VR/AR headset.
The Apple Vision Pro VR/AR headset will include a cinema feature that lets users project movies and TV shows onto a giant virtual screen. In addition to Apple's own streaming service, Apple TV+, Disney+ will also be available at launch. Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement personally during the keynote at this year's WWDC developer conference.
Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro: More than just movies
During the announcement of Apple's new VR/AR headset, Iger showed a short trailer of various immersive content from Disney for the Apple Vision Pro. These included a digital Mickey Mouse walking through physical space and virtual elements from Disney World appearing on a kitchen counter. An AR experience from the Marvel universe was also part of the trailer.
So in addition to traditional streaming, Disney seems to be planning more augmented reality content for the Apple headset. Iger closed the presentation by saying, "These are just a few of the ways we can bring Disney into your world with Apple Vision Pro. We are looking forward to sharing more with you in the coming months."
Is Disney reviving Metaverse efforts?
Late last year, Disney released an augmented reality movie starring Brie Larson on Disney Plus that, when paired with a tablet or smartphone, brought digital content into the living room. More content was announced, but nothing has come since.
Just a few months later, the Wall Street Journal even reported that Disney was shutting down its own Metaverse division and laying off fifty of its employees as part of a larger downsizing. However, it seems that the entertainment company has not completely given up on immersive storytelling. What Disney's plans are will be revealed in the coming months.
