Playstation VR 2: Sony announces 5 new VR games

More VR games for Playstation VR 2 will be released in the first month than previously expected. Among them is an action-packed flight simulation.

The packed lineup of PSVR 2 games in the launch month continues to grow. The German Playstation blog revealed, among other things, a sequel to the sci-fi shooter Solaris Offworld Combat and a conversion of the graphically complex VR adventure Wanderer.

Some of this was apparently unveiled too early, as the post has been removed. Among the titles was also the comically brutal gladiator game Gorn, which was not announced for Playstation VR 2 until now.

Less surprising is the announcement that Mighty Coconut is bringing the terrific social VR game Walkabout Mini Golf to PSVR 2. The sports game is to be released "soon" for the new VR headset.

The titles revealed by Sony are coming in the first month after launch - if the information in the now-deleted post is correct. Below is an overview of the announcements. All other titles can be found in the overview of all announced games for Playstation VR 2.

Sony apparently revealed Solaris Offworld Combat II too early. It showed up in a gallery for PSVR 2 games coming out in the launch month. Meanwhile, the German Playstation Blog has removed the entry again. On Twitter, developer First Contact Entertainment succinctly confirmed that the game is indeed in the works. "More details coming soon," the tweet reads. Nothing more is known yet.

As in the original for Quest, PSVR, and PC VR, it is likely to be straightforward multiplayer shootouts on space stations. The scenario and gameplay of Solaris Offworld Combat are reminiscent of Halo. However, the somewhat hectic implementation does not look as mature as the Xbox classic or the elegant locomotion in the VR shooter Hyper Dash.

The same studio is currently known to have another game in the works for the Playstation VR 2, namely the exclusive Firewall Ultra. Its predecessor Firewall Zero Hour, which was also released exclusively for Playstation VR and has enjoyed great popularity on that platform, is one of the best tactical shooters virtual reality has to offer.

Walkabout Mini Golf

Walkabout Mini Golf will be released "soon" on PSVR2, according to developer Mighty Coconut. Eight easy and eight hard courses are included in the implementation. In addition, you can purchase another eight DLC courses.

Already available on Quest, Pico 4, and PC VR headsets, the game is the most relaxing way to meet friends in virtual reality. Getting started is as easy as playing real minigolf: put on your VR headset, select your minigolf clubs, and off you go to your first course.

Apart from the imaginative courses, which always present you with difficult tasks, the excellent physics is one of the main reasons why Walkabout Mini Golf is so great and collects top ratings in rows. The presence of the other players as avatars is perfect to entertain yourself while playing.

Additionally, you can go on a treasure hunt and collect over 100 different golf balls or search for fragments that will bring you new clubs. A matchmaking system will find players around the globe for you at any time. The studio has ruled out an implementation for PSVR. Here is an overview of the feature support for the different platforms:

Wanderer

Adventure fans might have been happy to see that the VR adventure Wanderer, nominated as one of the best VR games of 2022, also showed up in Sony's post before it was deleted. Developer studio Mighty Eyes succinctly confirmed the PSVR 2 port on Twitter with a post that also shows a blurry image, "Since there's already been a leak...we thought we'd add a bit of fuel to the fire."

The time-travel adventure seems like the ideal candidate for a port to Playstation VR 2. The atmospheric backdrops and mystical storyline were already compelling on PC VR and PSVR. With the help of an advanced wristwatch, you visit eras and locations such as ancient temples or the workshop of Nikola Tesla.

However, the puzzles and many inventory items might deter newcomers. The game design is based on tricky classics like Deponia, Monkey Island & Co., and not on adventures focused on narrative, like Telltale's The Walking Dead.

Project Wingman

If you don't want a beer-soaked simulation, but gritty flying action, you might get your money's worth with Project Wingman. Sector D2's flight game in the style of Ace Combat already received successful VR support on the PC in 2021.

The elaborate scenery was already worth seeing at the time, even if the scope made it clear that an indie studio was behind the game. Details about the implementation for PSVR 2 are not yet known. Project Wingman is one of the titles that Sony apparently revealed too early on the German Playstation Blog and deleted the post shortly later - in this case without official confirmation from the developer.
