Mechs and rocket fists: VR game "Ultimechs" launches for free
The upcoming VR game from hit studio Resolution Games (Blaston, Demeo) features free mech competitions and other options that come with membership.
With Ultimechs, you slip into the metallic garb of lightning-fast mechs and play a sport called Superball. The goal is to get the ball into the opponent's goal using rocket fists. The VR game's default mode is two teams of two, but it also supports duels.
"When we designed Ultimechs, we tried to keep in mind what would go into creating a new sport that people would love playing and watching years from now," says studio founder and CEO Tommy Palm. "Ultimechs combines the excitement, drama, and atmosphere of traditional sports and makes the action quick and simple to understand, with plenty of room for big power-plays and clever strategies."
Ultimechs will be free-to-play
The free game's scheduled release date is September 15. Look forward to playing on Meta Quest 2 (review) (sorry, Quest 1 owners) and Pico headsets (review), or on Steam.
Resolution Games makes their money on the free game through "Ultipass." The seasonal membership brings cosmetic upgrades and personalization options for your own mechs. We anticipate more information on price and content in the run-up to the launch.
Those who own a PC and want to try Ultimechs before launch will have the opportunity to do so from August 25-28. The studio is hosting a preview weekend on Steam for team and solo players. A new gameplay video (see above) introduces the game mechanics and offers pro-tips from an Ultimechs developer.
Play Ultimechs at Gamescom
Another opportunity to test Ultimechs before its release is at Gamescom. Find the Resolution Games booth at #C051 in hall 09.1.
After Blaston (review), Ultimechs is the second competitive title from the Swedish VR hit studio with e-sports ambitions.
On August 1, the qualification for the first Blaston Championship started with prize money of $10,000. The finals will be broadcast via Twitch on November 5 and 6. The best VR players from the USA and Europe will be crowned. More information is available on the official website.
