Resident Evil, Cyberpunk, Minecraft - VR Mod List for Gaming Hits

VR mods for PC games are getting better and better. Well-known video games like Resident Evil, Cyberpunk, Valheim or Alien can also be played in virtual reality with mods.

Mods that port classic games to virtual reality are as old as the first Oculus prototypes. The expressions on the testers' faces when John Carmack presented them with a Doom 3 VR port on a prototype of the Oculus Rift are unforgettable. With the first commercially available VR headsets, projects like VorpX or VR ports like the MotherVR mod for Alien Isolation quickly emerged.

The quality of VR modifications has steadily increased since then. There are now mods for numerous classics and current games. This was also made possible by the "Flatscreen to VR Modding Community" discord, where passionate VR modders exchange ideas with each other and with their community.

The changing world of VR mods

We regularly expand our VR mod list, so it's best to bookmark it. In the latest update, Luke Ross' R.E.A.L. VR mods for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mafia have been removed as they are no longer available on Patreon. The reason is a DMCA of the publisher Take-Two.

Alien: Isolation

• Available: Yes

The MotherVR mod for Alien: Isolation, released in 2014, is one of the oldest VR mods. Modder Nibre released the first version back in the summer of 2017, and the last update was released at the end of 2020.

Alien: Isolation is a horror game with a focus on stealth gameplay. 15 years after the events of the first Alien movie, you play the daughter of Ellen Ripley, who investigates the disappearance of her mother.

Defend yourself against humans and androids on a space station. The biggest danger, however, comes from the eponymous alien, which chases you through the space station. Instead of just shooting your way out, you sneak through the dark corridors as inconspicuously as possible.

Alien: Isolation is compatible with a mouse and keyboard, classic controller, or VR controllers. The VR mod does not offer motion control with a VR controller. Nibre planned that integration, but also works on a Halo VR mod. He was also hired by Halo developer 343 Industries in the middle of the year.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 came out in September 2020 in a disastrous state after a long development time. The title is now playable on PC and new consoles thanks to numerous patches, even though numerous hoped-for features remain missing. During development, there were always discussions about a possible VR mode. However, the developers at CD Projekt Red decided against supporting virtual reality.

Fittingly for the 10th anniversary of the vorpX software, the responsible developer Ralph released a free VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077. The VR mod is available on the vorpX website.

VR modder Luke Ross, responsible for numerous VR mods for GTA 5, Mafia, and Red Dead Redemption 2, also released a version of his R.E.A.L. VR mod for Cyberpunk 2077. Like his last VR mods, this variant is only available for Patreon supporters.

Dark Souls: Remastered

Dark Souls: Remastered brings the frustrating forefather of an entire genre to the PC in a spruced-up and better running form. In the game, you explore varied environments filled with deadly dangers, collect souls, and survive the difficult boss battles - or not. Rolling, casting spells, or using a giant axe, Dark Souls is also incredibly difficult in VR, but brings you even closer to the fascinating world of the cult game.

The VR mod for Dark Souls: Remastered comes from VR modder Luke Ross and is available for Patreon supporters.

Deep Rock Galactic

In the dwarf co-op hit Deep Rock Galactic, you advance with up to four people into space mines, collect resources, and defend yourself against sometimes overwhelming alien hordes. The game offers fun co-op action, a varied skill tree, and plenty of equipment.

Thanks to a team around modder Mr. Fristi, you can also play Deep Rock Galactic in VR, including crossplay with flat players and motion control. The VR mod VRG for Deep Rock Galactic is available on Mod.io.

Doom 3: BFG Edition

Doom 3 released in 2004, followed by an improved version in 2012 under the title Doom 3: BFG Edition. In the legendary horror shooter, you shoot your way through a UAC complex on Mars in the year 2145, straight into hell.

For Doom 3: BFG Edition, there is the "Doom3-BFG VR: Fully Possessed" mod, the first version of which released almost seven years ago. The VR mod lets you play Doom 3 in virtual reality with motion controllers and a visible body. The mod is no longer developed by the original modder.

There is also a Doom 3: VR Edition for Playstation VR and an unofficial Doom 3 port for Oculus Quest. A current version of the VR mod for Doom 3: BFG Edition can be found on Github.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is the first open-world game from the Dark Souls makers and a real milestone. There is something to discover everywhere, new, deadly dangers everywhere, and the world is gigantic. The story is presented in the usual fragmented and coded way, but the gameplay allows for numerous character builds and the design of the enemies is impressively varied.

Thanks to the open design, the game is also a bit more beginner-friendly than previous titles. So if you've never played a Dark Souls game before, give Elden Ring a chance - and why not directly in VR? The VR mod for Elden Ring comes from VR modder Luke Ross and is available to Patreon supporters.

Enderal: Forgotten Stories

Enderal: Forgotten Stories is a total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim including a completely new game world, story, characters, weapons, magic, professional dubbing, and everything that belongs to a first-class role-playing game. The SureAI development team previously released the Oblivion mod "Nehrim: At Fate's Edge" and the Morrowind mod "Arktwend - The Forgotten Realm".

The free Enderal tells an exciting story in a fantastic game world that invites exploration and surprises again and again. Enderal is a complete game that leaves the paid competition behind in many areas. So if you've played enough Skyrim, check out this mod - preferably in VR.

The Enderal VR mod lets you experience the full game in virtual reality. The mod uses the Skyrim VR engine, so almost all mods for Skyrim VR are compatible with the Enderal VR mod. So if you love VRIK, HIGGS, and other VR mods for maximum realism, you can mostly use them without any problems.

Firewatch

In the adventure game Firewatch, released in 2016, you explore the Shoshone National Forest as fire guard Henry in the summer of 1989. Mysterious events keep you on your toes, constantly accompanied by the danger of a large forest fire. Your only companion is your colleague Delilah, with whom you communicate via radio.

The VR mod "TwoForksVR" from the developer Raicuparta offers full motion controller support and is still in active development. Currently, access to the VR mod is only possible for Patreon supporters of the modder.

GTFO

The horror-survival game GTFO released to Early Access in 2019 and is a co-op title for up to four players that focuses on heavily combat, puzzles, and stealth. The title only recently left the Early Access phase.

Your team fights their way through a large underground complex in a crater to complete tasks for the mysterious Warden. The problem: the entire complex is filled with sleeping monsters that - once awakened - quickly overrun you.

The free VR mod "GTFO_VR_Plugin" released at the beginning of 2020 and now offers support for motion controllers.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Grand Theft Auto 5 released in 2013 and is still regularly updated in multiplayer. Various VR mods have been available for a few years, but the variant by Luke Ross, who previously developed a successful VR mod for No One Lives Forever 2 and now produces numerous VR mods, has prevailed.

The VR mod "R.E.A.L." allows you to play through GTA 5 completely, but motion controllers are not supported. The mod should therefore be played with a gamepad. R.E.A.L. also supports some of the popular graphics mods. The latest version is from December 2020 and requires the latest variant of Script Hook V. Multiplayer games are not possible.

The R.E.A.L. VR mod for GTA 5 is available on Github. There you can also find installation instructions and a link to the required script tool. The mod is part of Take-Two's DMCA against Luke Ross since July 2022, but the old version can still be found on Github.

Half-Life 2

Not much needs to be said about the revolutionary Half-Life 2. Unfortunately, there's not much at all to say about the VR mod announced in 2017. Because the VR mod, which promised a fully functional VR variant of the shooter milestone, disappeared into oblivion for years.

But a team led by VR developers Frydrych Holger and Simon "Dr. Beef" Brown has taken over the project. Dr. Beef already ported classics like Quake 1 and 2, Doom 3, and Half-Life 1 for Meta Quest. Holger brought AMD's Fidelity FX Super Resolution to SteamVR, for example.

The Half-Life 2 VR mod is available on Steam and makes Half-Life 2 the perfect VR game.

Horizon Zero Dawn

• Motion control with VR controller: No

In Horizon Zero Dawn, released in 2017 for Playstation 4 and 2020 for PC, you battle your way through a post-apocalyptic world where tribes fight each other and robot dinosaurs hunt you down. The still graphically impressive game is playable exclusively in third-person.

Thanks to modder Luke Ross and his R.E.A.L. VR mod, it is now possible to experience the title in virtual reality on the PC - provided that the hardware is suitably powerful. Players on the Playstation will still have to do without VR mode. Like all R.E.A.L. mods, VR players will have to do without motion control with VR controllers in Horizon Zero Dawn. The game can only be played with a controller or mouse and keyboard.

The VR mod for Horizon Zero Dawn was released in December 2021 and is available for Patreon supporters.

Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 released in 2009 and still has a community that plays the game every day. The zombie shooter is considered one of the best of all time and follows four survivors through numerous varied levels. 4D2 offers classic co-op as well as modes in which human players control the zombie opponents. The game has also received numerous mods over the years that bring new campaigns.

Modder SD805 (Kem) brings the zombie shooter to VR. His L4D2VR mod is available on Github. Here are detailed instructions on how to set it up.

Life is Strange - Before the Storm

In the 2017, adventure game Life is Strange - Before the Storm, you follow young Chloe Price and her relationship with classmate Rachel Amber. The second title in the Life is Strange series takes place three years before the events of the first game.

VR modder Trev is developing a comprehensive VR mod for the second part of Life is Strange, including motion control with VR controllers and rudimentary hand tracking. The DawnVR mod for Life is Strange: Before the Storm is available on Github. Follow the development in the corresponding Discord channel of the Flatscreen to VR modding community.

Mechwarrior 5

• Available: Yes

In the BattleTech game MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, you control mechs through the landscapes of the year 3015. As Commander Mason, you build up a new powerful force from the remains of your mercenary troop.

Mechwarrior 5 is the first single-player part since 2002 and was originally supposed to be released with a VR mode. However, developer Piranha Games decided against it in the end and released the game in 2019 without VR support.

The modder KITT, therefore, took on the project independently and developed a VR mod for the Unreal Engine 4 title. Currently, the mod does not support motion control with VR controllers, but plays well with controllers.

The VR mod VRWarrior for Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries has been available on Nexus Mods since September 2021.

Minecraft Java Edition

Minecraft is a phenomenon: Released in 2009, millions of people still play the building block simulator. This is also due to the development studio's uninterrupted support - just recently, a major update brought new biomes, deeper caves, and other improvements.

The game is available on every platform imaginable - from smartphone, to Nintendo Switch, to Playstation, Xbox, and PC. However, the PC has a peculiarity - there are two versions developed in parallel.

Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Minecraft for Windows) allows crossplay and has native VR support for Oculus headsets. The Java version, on the other hand, still preferred by many players, has no official VR support. But thanks to the VR mod Vivecraft, Java fans can also immerse themselves in VR. Vivecraft supports almost all VR headsets, is modding compatible, offers extensive support for VR controllers, and you can play together with monitor gamers.

Morrowind

The third part of the "Elder Scrolls" series, released in 2002, remains the favorite installment of the impressive fantasy epics for many fans. As a former prisoner, you start out on a ship in the harbor of Seyda Neen, a small village on the strange-looking island of Morrowind. There you make contact with an agent of an imperial secret organization.

Morrowind offers a huge game world full of secrets, complex - and partly outdated - role-playing systems, and two decades of mods.

The OpenMW project is more than a mod: the developers have been porting the classic role-playing game to an open-source engine, including numerous improvements, for more than 13 years. In the meantime, Morrowind is completely playable in OpenMW. Those who have had enough of Skyrim VR can play a VR variant of the open-source Morrowind thanks to OpenMW developer Mads Buvik Sandvei.

Outer Wilds

In the action-adventure Outer Wilds, released in 2019, you explore a solar system trapped in a 22-minute time loop with a supernova ending. With each loop, you gather more information about the system and its history. Can you break the time loop?

In the game, you fly a spaceship exploring planets and encountering anomalies. The VR mod from developer Raicuparta is therefore only recommended for strong stomachs. But, Outer Worlds is a real VR highlight.

Raft

Raft is a survival game on the ocean. You build your namesake raft alone or with friends, defend against sharks, and sail from island to island in search of Utopia, the last habitable piece of land.

Similar to The Forest, Raft manages to skillfully combine survival elements and story. Thanks to the RaftVR mod by DrBibop, you can explore the ocean in VR, including multiplayer and motion control.

Resident Evil 2, 3, 7 and 8

No video game series is likely to have as much choice for VR fans in the future as Resident Evil. The first VR spin-off came out with Resident Evil 7 for Playstation VR (review), then more recently there was Resident Evil 4 for Meta Quest 2.

Thanks to modder Praydog, even more parts may soon be available for VR. Praydog is developing VR mods for the 2019 and 2020 remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, as well as the newer spin-offs Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8.

The modder previously released first-person perspective mods for the remakes. His VR mods build on this work and provide a first-person perspective as well as full motion control with VR controllers.

The VR mods for Resident Evil 2 and 3 are available on Github and include rudimentary support for parts 7 and 8. This is currently being expanded by Praydog and will probably be released soon.

Risk of Rain 2

Risk of Rain 2 is a rouge-like third-person shooter released in 2020. Shoot your way through hordes of monsters alone or with up to three other players and collect equipment on the run from an alien planet.

The co-op title received good reviews and has a large fan base. Thanks to VR modder DrBibop, you can now experience the game in VR. Unlike on the monitor, the mod is played in the first-person perspective, including comprehensive support for VR controllers. The mod is also compatible with the native version of the game, so you can survive in VR with non-VR players.

The VR mod for is available on Thunderstore along with the necessary mods for DrBibop's VR mod. Follow the development in the Discord channel of the Flatscreen to VR modding community.

The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe

In 2013, The Stanley Parable showed that walking simulators can be awesome. The Ultimate Edition builds on the classic and brings new content. If you haven't played Stanley Parable yet - or don't even know what it's about - you should check it out immediately.

Those who have already explored the game in all its ways can now experience the dry humor in VR. VR modder Raicuparta, who also brought Outer Wilds and Firewatch into virtual reality, is behind the mod for Stanley Parable.

Valheim

At the beginning of 2021, Valheim was an absolute surprise hit. The Viking game brought a breath of fresh air to the dusty survival genre and captivated millions of players.

In Valheim you play dead heroes who fight against Odin's enemies. The mix of exploration, survival, building, and combat makes for a lot of fun, especially in co-op mode. Each new biome offers its own challenges and a challenging boss fight that requires new resources.

The VHVR mod by modder Brandon Mousseau brings a comprehensive VR mode to Valheim including first-person perspective, motion control with VR controllers, and co-op support. The beautiful world of Valheim is a special experience in VR.

Unreal Engine VR Injector

Apart from the numerous titles listed here, the list of games that support VR could soon explode: Modder Praydog, responsible for the Resident Evil VR mods, is developing the Unreal Engine VR Injector.

The Injector adds native UE VR code to Unreal Engine titles and launches the game in VR. Praydog's mod could therefore enable VR for any UE4 and UE5 game. Modders can then retrofit other features like motion control.

Titles shown so far include the cat game Stray, the zombie shooter Back for Blood, the SWAT simulation Ready Or Not, and the construction game Satisfactory. The Unreal Engine VR Injector mod by Praydog is not available yet.
