Metaverse office: Meta now lets you work on the beach
The third major update is released for Horizon Workrooms. It brings chilling beach environments and other improvements.
Horizon Workrooms is Meta's answer to video conferencing. With the social presence that virtual reality offers, it aims to create closeness and a sense of togetherness, much like a physical office.
Users appear as cartoon avatars and can stream their computer screen into the virtual space or doodle on a whiteboard. Some keyboards are recognized by the Meta Quest 2 and transferred to virtual reality in their original scale. This makes it possible to work with the physical computer or laptop in VR.
Those who don't have VR glasses can join the meeting classically in the form of a 2D video stream.
Meta cultivates the VR office
Horizon Workooms was released in August 2021 and is still in beta. Since the launch, three updates improved the VR meetings. Update 1.1 brought support for AR tags for keyboards and M1 chips, more intuitive whiteboard operation, and easier access to computer streaming.
Update 1.2 added a lectern for presentation, new city and country environments, and customization options for individual meeting rooms. Companies have since been able to add logos or posters of their company to the walls.
Meetings on the beach
The third and most recent update brings several new environments with Caribbean flair and ocean views. Also new is the ability to high five, as the following video shows.
The software responsible for streaming desktop content into VR now also transmits audio. Meta has also improved the computer connection and the stability of the VR app.
In addition to Horizon Workrooms, which is designed for VR meetings, there is also the personal VR office Infinite Office, which should roll out to Quest users soon.
You can download Horizon Workrooms from the Oculus Store for Meta Quest 2.
