Minecraft to drop support for PC VR headsets next year
Mojang is ending PC VR support for Minecraft. Minecraft fans can switch to the superior Vivecraft mod.
Mojang announced this in the latest changelog for the Bedrock Edition (see sources below).
"Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PC and be able to play without a VR/MR device. From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will continue to be available on a non-VR/MR graphics device such as a computer monitor. You will no longer be able to use your VR/MR device with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates."
This change will affect the Windows Mixed Reality version of Minecraft. In September, Mojang also announced the discontinuation of the PSVR version of Minecraft.
The unofficial Vivecraft for PC VR, which is based on the Java Edition, and the Quest-native QuestCraft should not be impacted by this.
The cancellation comes as no surprise, especially since Mojang owner Microsoft has largely withdrawn from the VR/AR market. Its PC VR platform Windows Mixed Reality has also been discontinued, as has Hololens 2.
In the XR space, Microsoft is now cooperating with market leader Meta. The first result of this collaboration are Xbox Cloud Gaming and Office web apps for Meta Quest. A Quest with Xbox branding, volumetric Windows apps and a digital monitor extension have been announced for the future.
