Flat2VR Studios: Funding program helps "port dream games to VR"
Huge success for VR startup: Top investor boosts Flat2VR Studios with $750,000 in funding and industry coaching.
Flat2VR Studios, a subsidiary of Impact Reality, has been accepted into the highly selective A16Z GAMES SPEEDRUN 3 funding program of renowned venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The program kicked off on July 29 in Los Angeles and will run until October 20, 2024.
Only 37 companies were selected from over 4,100 applicants. A16Z GAMES SPEEDRUN invests $750,000 in each selected startup and provides an intensive twelve-week curriculum of mentoring and industry coaching.
Jasmine Uniza, CEO of Impact Reality, sees this as a great opportunity: "Benefiting from the resources and connections that Andreessen Horowitz brings to the table will help us pursue some of the larger, dream titles we've always wanted to port to VR."
Eric Masher, COO of Impact Reality, emphasizes the significance for the VR industry: "Having a company like a16z invest in a VR development studio shows their faith in the VR industry."
Another milestone for the new VR startup
Flat2VR Studios emerged from the Flat2VR modding community, which has been unofficially porting popular flatscreen games to VR for years. The newly founded studio will now use this expertise to develop and market licensed VR ports.
Partners include well-known modders such as Raicuparta (Firewatch VR) and Holger "Cabalistic" Frydrych (Half-Life 2 VR). Team Beef, known for VR ports of Doom and Quake, is also on board.
Flat2VR Studios recently secured a partnership with investment firm Hartmann Capital. The acceptance into the a16z program is another important step for the young start-up.
Flat2VR Studios is currently working on an official VR port of a popular Steam and Switch game for release in late 2024 or early 2025. The studio will be present at this year's Gamescom in Cologne, Germany as part of the XR Megabooth "Home of XR". Flat2VR has also registered for the VR Games Showcase, which is taking place for the first time this year, to present new projects.
