Playstation VR 2 sees surge in sales after heavy discount
The Playstation VR 2 is said to have sold more on Sunday than during the whole year. The obvious reason is a big discount.
The Shortcut reports that sales of the Playstation VR 2 increased 2,350 percent in 24 hours, and that more units were sold on Sunday than in the entire year. According to the site, it had access to exclusive retailer data.
Over the weekend, the Playstation VR 2 was heavily discounted in both the US and UK: $200 in the US and a similar amount in the UK. The device is now sold out on Amazon US.
This is the biggest and most aggressive discount on the Playstation VR 2 to date, and it comes ahead of the launch of the PC adapter, which will be released on August 7 and turns the device into a PC VR headset.
As far as we know, this is a temporary discount.
Playstation VR 2 needs a permanent price cut
Those numbers look impressive. The question is how well or poorly the Playstation VR 2 sold before that. Sony reportedly halted production in the spring because unsold units were piling up.
Nevertheless, the discount certainly had a positive effect. The high price of the device (the headset usually costs more than the PS5) was and is one of the main obstacles to the product's success.
Hopefully, the discount will spread to other countries and become a permanent price reduction, giving Sony's VR ecosystem a much-needed boost.
Since the end of 2023, the headset has been making mostly negative headlines. Most recently, it was reported that Sony was making deep cuts to funding for VR games.
