Quest 2's worldwide stock is running low, making way for Quest 3S
Meta Quest 2 is almost sold out, which begs the question: When will Quest 3S be released?
On the Meta Store, Quest 2 is now only available in 4 out of 23 supported countries, according to research by MIXED.
In the largest VR market, the United States, Quest 2 is no longer sold on the Meta Store. The major US retailers (Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart) also no longer carry it.
Meta Quest 3 is still readily available, although at $500 it is in the higher price range.
The Quest 2 was last sold for $200 after two price cuts and the price of the accessory was halved. The price reductions indicated a clearance sale, as no new units are being produced. Now, Meta seems very close to its goal of selling out the last generation products.
The launch of Quest 3S may be imminent
For some time now, there have been credible reports that a new VR headset will be released this year that will follow in Quest 2's footsteps in terms of price, costing around $300.
Meta itself may have leaked the name of the new headset: Meta Quest 3S. As the name suggests, it is a budget version of the Quest 3 with the same chipset, controllers, and color passthrough, but the display and lenses of the Quest 2 (see alleged specifications and the chart below).
The question now is when Meta Quest 3S will be released.
Is Meta really waiting until Meta Connect 2024 in September to unveil the headset? Or will it be released before then? Either way, Meta would be missing out on a lot of sales if it waited three months or more to launch the product.
