Meta Quest 2: Meta plans million-dollar ad for Super Bowl
Meta is promoting Meta Quest 2 at the upcoming Super Bowl. What is the commercial about?
The Super Bowl LVI, the NFL final, will take place on February 13, 2022. The football final has a high status in the USA: Around 100 million Americans watch it every year.
Advertising space during the breaks in the game is correspondingly expensive. In 2021, a 30-second commercial costs an average of $5.6 million to air. Meta will air a one-minute commercial on Feb. 13. The commercials, some of which are very elaborately produced, are as much a part of the Super Bowl as the game itself.
A reunion in the Metaverse
Meta teased the commercial this week with a mysterious YouTube clip. It features a '90s-style arcade restaurant with atmospheric neon lighting. The name of the restaurant: Questy's. This is a reference to Meta's VR mascot of the same name, which starred in a viral advertising campaign in December.
The commercial centers on a group of friends who haven't seen each other in a while and reunite (virtually) with the help of Quest 2 and Horizon Worlds, according to VRScout. The protagonists of the commercial are not supposed to be animatronics instead of people.
Horizon Worlds is Meta's flagship project and Metaverse platform. It opened in December, initially to residents of the U.S. and Canada, and is slated for release on mobile devices later this year.
Visit Questy's in VR
According to Adweek, the commercial will premiere on Feb. 10 during ABC's Good Morning America. At the Super Bowl, it will air during the first quarter of the game.
It won't stop at the commercial: Meta partnered with leading Horizon Worlds creators to build a duplicate restaurant for the Metaverse platform. There you will be able to hang out with friends, play arcade games and eat virtual pizza.
