This VR emulator turns NES games into 3D worlds, and its latest update supports Steam Frame controls

An emulator that turns compatible NES games into three-dimensional scenes has received a major VR update. Geod Studio says 3dSenVR 2.0 now uses OpenXR and supports Steam Frame controllers alongside PC VR headsets.

The app gives selected 8-bit games depth and lets players view them in a headset. It is a separate VR version of 3dSen, and players need to supply their own game files; it does not include Nintendo’s game library.

The update also adds visual controls, a redesigned library and options for remapping VR buttons. Geod Studio lists SteamVR headsets and Steam Frame, as well as Meta Quest connections through Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop. The developer describes OpenXR as a PC VR standard and does not specify standalone Steam Frame support in its update notes.

The update gives players more control over the scene

A new Retina rendering mode creates smoother shapes instead of building every pixel as a block. Players can select it under Display and adjust effects such as reflections, shading, pixel shadows, voxel grooves and world curvature.

The developer says those effects start switched off. The classic appearance remains available, so the new style is a choice rather than a mandatory replacement.

Version 2.0 also offers a dedicated Scene Scale tab in VR and lets users remap headset-controller buttons for functions such as rewind, fast-forward and quick saves. Steam Frame’s D-pad now works with an Xbox-like layout, according to the developer’s update notes.

The library and headset menus work differently now

The revised library supports grid or list views, cover art, search, filtering and favourites. It can be navigated with a gamepad and has an on-screen keyboard for searches.

In VR, players can point with a controller and pull the trigger to select items. Geod Studio has removed the old gaze-control option; returning users will need to use a controller pointer or gamepad instead.

If the app opens on the desktop instead of in the headset, the developer recommends checking that the headset’s OpenXR runtime is active in SteamVR settings or the Meta Quest Link app. The Steam listing describes the supported-game approach and the PC requirements.
