FACTS

The just-released beta 1.34.1 of Virtual Desktop for Meta Quest brings a handful of technical upgrades, headlined by the debut of adjustable field of view controls. Developer Guy Godin has rolled out this update through the app’s beta channel, giving early access to power users.

The marquee feature is the new “FOV Tangent” sliders, which appear under a freshly added “Advanced” tab in the streamer window. Early testers are already reporting major performance wins here — dialing the FOV down to around 85% of the default setting can boost frame rates in many games, all without introducing those dreaded black bars at the screen’s edge.

Additional updates and fixes

This beta also introduces a two-pass encoding option for Nvidia GPU owners, which now works with 10-bit codecs. You’ll find this in the Streamer application’s “Options” tab. On top of that, bitrate foveation for 10-bit codecs is now supported on Nvidia cards — a feature previously limited to H.264/H.264+.

A few more quality-of-life improvements and tweaks round out the release:

  • The headset’s charging status now shows in the menu and has been fixed within SteamVR.
  • A recent change to HEVC 10-bit support with AMD graphics cards has been rolled back after causing issues in certain scenarios.
  • Kaspersky has been added to the list of conflicting applications.
  • For macOS users, there’s now a Cmd+Q shortcut to quit the streamer, along with support for rotating monitors in VR when running macOS Sequoia.
  • The Steam version of Into the Radius now defaults to the Oculus runtime for improved compatibility.

If you want to try these features early, the developer asks that all feedback for this beta be directed to the dedicated beta testing channel on Discord. You’ll need to enable the beta channel in the app’s settings and manually download the beta streamer for Windows or macOS to participate.

CONTEXT

Second Update in April

Virtual Desktop remains one of the go-to apps for streaming PC content to VR headsets like the Meta Quest series. Earlier this month, version 1.34 landed with a major overhaul for the macOS streamer. Version 1.34 was a ground-up rewrite, bringing native support for both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. This new beta continues the rapid pace of improvements, making Virtual Desktop an even more versatile tool for VR enthusiasts.
