FACTS

Spatial Ops, a mixed-reality shooter designed for multiplayer battles in the living room, will also feature a two-hour single-player campaign, Resolution Games has announced. The studio describes it as follows:

"Set in an 80s action/sci-fi movie-inspired setting, take on the role of agent throughout seven handcrafted levels with a fully narrated story as portals spawn around you from every angle. Develop as a character by unlocking and upgrading your weapons as you set out to save the world."

In addition to the single-player campaign, there will be an Arena mode for explosive multiplayer skirmishes.

In this mode, you can map out an entire floor plan for laser-tag-like play to play co-located 1v1 up to 4v4 in different game modes like Free for All, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag and Domination. Alternatively, you can also play against bots. The bots can hide behind real furniture in the room while bullets hit the walls and grenades bounce off the furniture.

CONTEXT & OPINION

Resolution Games expands the mixed reality shooter niche

Implementing a single-player campaign for Spatial Ops makes sense because the multiplayer mode requires multiple Quest headsets.

There are currently only a few mixed reality shooters that integrate physical space into the gaming experience (e.g. Home Invasion) and even fewer that can be played locally with friends (e.g. Laser Limbo). Resolution Games is trying to expand the niche in a meaningful way. A lot will depend on how easy it is to set up and start multiplayer battles with multiple headsets.

Resolution Games is one of my favorite VR studios, and I'm curious to see if it will set a new standard for mixed reality shooters. I'm also wondering how the title will play on Quest 2 and Quest Pro, which don't support Space Setup.
