Meta Quest: Update v68 brings free Layout app and better graphics for Quest 3
The latest software update for Meta Quest introduces a room planning app, speeds up app downloads and optimizes the graphics performance of Quest 3.
Meta has announced the v68 software update for its VR headsets. It will be rolled out gradually for Meta Quest 3, Quest Pro and Quest 2 starting this week.
Layout is finally here
One of the most significant new features is the new Layout app. It allows users to virtually measure and redesign rooms and objects. For example, the size of a new TV on the wall or the position of a sofa can be visualized without actually moving the furniture.
According to Meta, it can also be used to measure the square footage of a room, align picture frames on a wall, or measure a kitchen counter. The free mixed reality app was originally supposed to be released with the V60 update. We have already tested Layout in advance.
Improved download speed, graphics update for Quest 3 and more
Meta has also improved the download speed for apps. Multiple applications can now be downloaded at the same time. A new "Downloads" tab in the library also allows you to manage all installations in one place.
Other improvements include:
- A new timing algorithm for OpenXR is designed to improve frame rate and latency.
- The battery warning now also sounds when the headset is removed.
- Cloud backups for apps can now be managed in the headset.
- Controllers can be paired directly to the headset (previously only via mobile app)
- The audio balance between microphone and game audio can be adjusted when recording.
- The virtual keyboard has been updated.
- New tabs in the app library for downloads and a complete overview.
Exclusively for Quest 3, there are additional graphical improvements such as reduced latency and adjustable brightness. The Content Adaptive Brightness Control reduces the contrast in darker scenes to achieve a more harmonious overall picture. The screenshot resolution has also been increased to 2160 × 2160 pixels.

Other new features that will be released alongside the software update
Along with the headset update, the mobile companion app has also been redesigned. It is now called "Meta Horizon" and enables audio calls between the app and the headset.
Meta also announced that its AI assistant called "Meta AI" will be introduced as an experimental feature on Quest. It will help users get information and control the device with their voice.
With Play Now Pay Later, Meta is introducing a new payment model for headset purchases in the US. Customers can now purchase Quest headsets in installments.
