Meta now lets you update your Quest manually via PC & cable

Meta has developed a web tool that allows you to update Quest to the latest system version yourself.

FACTS

System updates are rolled out to Quest headsets in stages. In the event of a buggy update, Meta can react early and withdraw the update. For this reason, it may take days or weeks for an update to reach your individual Quest headset.

If for some reason this does not happen and your Quest gets "stuck" or other problems occur, there is now an official workaround in addition to resetting the device to factory settings.

"The software update tool checks to make sure the software on your Meta Quest is up to date. This may help to fix software-related issues such as slow performance, unresponsive apps, or if your headset is stuck in an unusable state," the support page says. Your settings, files, data, and games remain intact.

The web tool will guide you through the steps. You will need a computer with at least 2 GB of free disk space and a USB-C cable. The cable that comes with the Quest is sufficient.

Please note that you won't necessarily get all the new Quest 3 features on your headset with this tool. If, like me, you're still waiting for the passthrough improvements of the v66 system update, the manual install won't help, as those improvements and features are being rolled out separately and there's nothing you can do to speed them up, even if you have v66 installed already.

I have not tried the web tool myself. If you have any experience with it, let us know in the comments.
