Meta Quest: The only way out of this VR escape room is through a psychedelic nightmare

Dark Trip for Meta Quest turns a classic VR escape room into a drug-fueled descent into psychedelic horror.
When Dark Trip, a psychedelic VR horror game, hit Early Access on February 13, it promised a twisted new take on the escape room genre. Now, the latest update delivers the full first episode of this offbeat VR experience for Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest 2.
A VR descent into psychedelia
According to the developers at iTales VR, Episode 1 spans ten meticulously crafted rooms and offers roughly two hours of gameplay. The core hook is an unusual mechanic that has you flipping between reality and drug-induced hallucinations to solve puzzles and push the story forward.
You play as an investigator searching for a missing woman, but the plot quickly veers into darker territory: Nazi experiments, psychedelic rituals, sadomasochistic visuals, occult science, and time travel all collide in a narrative that’s anything but straightforward. With the addition of a new evidence collection system, the developers aim to deepen the story and encourage replaying to uncover more details.
New episodes already on the way
The update also brings a major overhaul to character animations. The placeholder "Medium" character from Early Access is gone, replaced by a fully realized model with flashy outfits and high-quality animations. The VR movement system got a polish, too — now supporting teleportation, smooth locomotion, joystick navigation, and room-scale play.
iTales VR says they're committed to rolling out ongoing improvements and fresh content. Narrative Game Designer Sergey Lobov is already leading development on the storylines for Episodes 2 and 3. The complete version of Dark Trip, featuring all three episodes, is slated for release in 2026 on both the Meta Horizon Store and Steam.
Looking for something less intense? Try this escape room alternative
If the heavy themes of Dark Trip are a little much, but you’re still after a solid VR escape room, there’s always Escape Simulator VR. As Tomislav puts it in his quick review: “If you are looking for an escape room game that you can play for hours with friends in VR, Escape Simulator is an excellent choice.” You get a big lineup of themed rooms — everything from archaeology to Da Vinci is in the mix.
