Cult game “I Expect You to Die” returns on PCVR and Quest
The VR game series “I Expect You To Die” can’t be killed. Fortunately. Developer Schell Games just announced a third installment.
I Expect You To Die is one of the first and most successful VR games. In this mixture of agent game and escape room, you take on the role of Agent Phoenix and thwart the plans of your adversary the villainous Dr. Zor in his quest for world domination.
The original 2016 game received a sequel in 2021, as well as an MR spin-off the following year. All of the games stand out for their humor and ironic play with agent movie clichés, the absurd situations they put you in, as well as their hand interactions and clever puzzles.
I played through both titles and had a great time. So I’m happy to see that Schell Games has announced a third installment titled “Cog in the Machine”.
The game again demands your skills
Schell Games describes the latest agent adventure as follows:
“In I Expect You To Die 3, players must outwit their most cunning adversary to date in this spy-themed VR puzzle series. Players will experience brand-new missions, wield complex gadgets, visit action-packed locales, engage with robots, harness the power of telekinesis, and wear custom attire as they dive back into the world of espionage.”
The sequel, according to CEO Jesse Schell, is full of the classic hilarity of the familiar games. “From cheeky jokes to multiple outrageous puzzle solutions, players familiar and new to the franchise will enjoy tactical challenges in tandem with light-hearted humor.”
A trailer (see below) gives a taste of the new missions.
I Expect You To Die 3 coming in 2023
A VR series lasting for three games is not a given in the VR niche. That I Expect You to Die hit the milestone is a strong sign of the series’ success. The first two titles have so far garnered 38 awards or award nominations, and the original took in $1M in less than a week.
I Expect You To Die 3: Cog in the Machine will be released later this year for Meta Quest and PC VR. A version for Playstation VR 2 (review) has curiously not been announced, though the VR system launched today. My money is on a later release of all three titles in a graphically and technically improved package. But that’s speculation on my part.
If you haven’t played the first two parts, you can currently purchase them at a 20 percent discount from the Meta Quest Store or Steam. Do you like agent movies, escape rooms, and humor? Then don’t miss out on these games.
