Apple's first scripted VR film is coming out on Thursday
Thursday will see the release of "Submerged," the first scripted VR movie created for Apple Vision Pro.
The movie will be released in Apple's Immersive Video format, which supports a stereoscopic image at 8K resolution and spatial audio playback. Apple has released several documentaries in this format, and more have been announced for this summer.
What makes Submerged different is that it is a narrative short film. Apple commissioned a renowned filmmaker to make it: Andrew Berger, the director of the four Oscar-winning anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front (2022).
The trailer released today shows a U-boat action spectacle worthy of Hollywood. It's a shame that hardly anyone will be able to enjoy the VR movie. Submerged can only be viewed with the Apple Vision Pro, which costs $3,500. Hopefully, a more affordable Apple headset will be released in the coming years, as the trailer is certainly intriguing.
Submerged will be released on October 10, 2024, exclusively for Apple TV+.
