Apple Vision Pro 2: Rumors claim new headset is already in production

A Chinese media outlet claims the second generation of Apple's mixed reality headset could launch as soon as 2025, contradicting previous analyst predictions.
According to Chinese tech site IT Home, citing an unnamed source, mass production of the second-generation Apple Vision Pro is already underway. The report suggests the new headset could hit the market later this year.
The source claims multiple independent informants have confirmed that key components like display panels and housing parts are in production. Named suppliers include Lens Technology for glass panels and Everwin Precision for housing components. Additional electronics suppliers are reportedly working on orders for the new device as well.
Industry experts paint a different picture
A full-fledged Apple Vision Pro 2 launching this year seems unlikely. While experts suggest we might see a revision of the current headset, even that would be surprising in 2025.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in January that Apple isn't planning any Vision Pro updates for 2025, with all indicators pointing to a 2026 launch. According to Gurman, Apple's current focus is on developing a more affordable version of the headset.
The Information also reported that Apple has temporarily paused development of a true successor to focus on a cheaper variant planned for late 2025.
Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that a new Vision Pro will enter production in the second half of 2025, featuring an M5 chip and Apple Intelligence. Kuo adds that a budget version likely won't arrive until 2027.
M5 chip production timeline raises questions
In a September report, Kuo indicated that an upcoming M5-equipped version would see minimal hardware and design changes, suggesting more of a refresh than a true second generation.
The M5 chip itself isn't expected to debut until late this year. According to Gurman, the first Apple devices to receive the new chip will be the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. While production is slated for the second half of 2025. It's doubtful that Apple would prioritize the niche Vision Pro for the M5 rollout.
Apple recently launched visionOS 2.4, an update that brings Apple Intelligence to the current Vision Pro for the first time, along with new spatial content features.
