After Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed many details about Meta's wearables roadmap earlier this year, a new report followed yesterday, focusing mainly on a project codenamed Hypernova, which are said to be Meta's first smart glasses with a display, reportedly planned for this year.

It is not clear from the report whether the glasses are being developed with Ray Ban owner EssilorLuxottica or by Meta alone. Since Gurman is silent on the matter, and The Information previously reported that Essilor Luxottica balked at the heavier design, the latter seems likely.

  • Hypernova is planned for late 2025 and will cost more than $1,000, possibly as much as $1,300 to $1,400. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, which are available from 300 US dollars, will remain on sale. The significant price increase is almost entirely due to the display.
  • The display is monocular and is located in the lower right quadrant of the right lens. Users will see it most clearly when looking down.
  • The user interface consists of a home screen of horizontally arranged circular icons, similar to the Dock on Macs or the user interface of Meta Quest 3.
  • The glasses will offer their own apps for taking and viewing photos and accessing maps. They will also display notifications from phone apps, including Meta's Messenger and WhatsApp.
  • The operating system is a highly customized version of Android. An integrated app store is not currently planned.
  • The glasses are controlled by capacitive touch controls on the temples, allowing users to scroll through apps or photos and confirm inputs by tapping. The other is a sEMG wristband (codenamed Ceres) for gesture control, which was first shown to the public in 2024. Meta is currently planning to bundle the accessory with the glasses.
  • Hypernova will otherwise support all the features of the conventional Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.
  • The camera will be upgraded to compete with the camera of an iPhone 13. Meta also wants to introduce a new case (codenamed Heres) for Hypernova in the shape of a triangular prism that can be folded.
  • Product development could still be halted. About 18 months ago, Meta abandoned a variant of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses codenamed Luna that removed the camera to reduce costs and privacy issues.

Hypernova successor already in development

Mark Gurman also provides an update on three other projects:

  • Meta is already working on a second generation of the Hypernova glasses, codenamed Hypernova 2, which will offer a binocular display instead of a monocular one. It is currently scheduled for 2027.
  • Work is nearing completion on a pair of Oakley glasses with features similar to Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses and no display. Meta recently began testing the glasses in public spaces. The codename is Supernova 2.
  • The Orion AR glasses product prototype unveiled in 2024 is being used for internal testing and app development. A planned successor for commercialization, codenamed Artemis, will not be released until 2027. It is unclear at this time whether Meta will ultimately combine the Hypernova and Artemis products, or whether they will be released separately at different price points.
