FACTS

Golf+, a bestselling virtual reality golf game on Meta Quest, has released a significant visual enhancement for Cliffs, the game's original course. The update delivers more realistic greens, improved fairways, and enhanced ocean views.

Cliffs represents just one of three courses included with the base game, though players can access 33 additional courses through paid DLC or a monthly €9 Golf+ Pass subscription. According to CEO and co-founder Ryan Engle, Cliffs holds special significance as the course that launched Golf+'s development. Players have completed nearly 4.5 million virtual rounds on the course since its release.

CONTEXT

From putting simulator to PGA powerhouse

As Engle told UploadVR, the game has sold over 1.5 million copies at $30 each, generating approximately $45 million in revenue before accounting for DLC and subscription revenue. Professional golfers like Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth have invested in the project, which has evolved from a simple putting simulator into a comprehensive VR golf experience.

In February 2023, Golf+ secured a long-term partnership with the PGA Tour, incorporating real tournament venues like TPC Scottsdale and TPC Sawgrass into the game.

The developers are working on a Meta Quest 3-exclusive mixed reality mini-golf mode that will let players enjoy pre-made courses or design and share their own. While the team has experimented with automatically generating courses based on real rooms, Engle recently announced on X that mixed reality course development is currently "on the back burner".
