FACTS

The team behind OrbusVR announced they'll stop selling the VR game across all platforms on February 10, 2025, with servers shutting down permanently on April 6, 2025.

“While we as a company have tried to sustain the game as long as possible, we have made the difficult decision to take this next and final step”, the team wrote on a blog post. They thanked their community for their support throughout the eight-year journey that began with development in 2016.

The months leading up to the shutdown will feature several farewell events. Players can look forward to increased legendary item drop rates, free access to all DLC content, and a final official mage tournament. The team also plans to share comprehensive statistics, including total playtime and monsters defeated across the game's lifetime.

This won't be the last update from the developers. Future blog posts will highlight memorable community moments, favorite locations, and behind-the-scenes stories from the game's history.

CONTEXT

Community is shocked, but grateful

Players responding to the announcement expressed both sadness and gratitude. Many shared how OrbusVR helped them through difficult times and led to lasting friendships. Some community members even offered financial support to keep the game running.

OrbusVR made its Early Access debut on Steam in December 2017, followed by a Meta Quest release two years later. As Virtual Reality's first MMORPG, it paved the way for later games like Zenith VR (now discontinued) and the still-in-development Ilysia.

VR MMORPGs face unique challenges in today's market. The limited player base makes it difficult for smaller studios to sustain the intensive development needed for these games. Additionally, many users prefer shorter VR sessions, making traditional MMO gameplay a tough sell in Virtual Reality.
