Meta Quest remains the platform of choice for VR developers
A survey shows that Meta Quest is still the dominant VR development platform. Other platforms are far behind.
Each year, the Game Developers Conference conducts a survey of game developers and industry professionals.
More than 3,000 people participated in this year's survey. The 2025 State of the Game Industry report has now been released, and the results provide some interesting insights into the state of VR as well.
"The number of developers working in virtual and augmented reality has remained consistent, as have the platforms of choice," the report states, providing the following figures:
- 59 percent of VR/AR developers are currently making games for Meta Quest
- 31 percent for Steam VR
- 16 percent for Playstation VR 2
- 8 percent for Apple Vision Pro
The report also claims that 35 percent of all game developers are working in VR/AR development, a figure that should be viewed with skepticism.
I couldn't find any information in the report about the time period in which the VR developers were surveyed.
The following image shows the results of a question asked of all game developers. Please note that interest in a platform does not mean that the developers in question are actually developing a game for that platform.
You can request the report from the GDC website.
No way around Meta
Meta has sold well over 20 million Quest headsets and has by far the largest install base. For for-profit developers, there's almost no way around Meta's VR marketplace.
Whether Apple and Google will be able to steal market share from Meta in the upcoming years is questionable, as I argued in a recent article. As long as there are only high-priced premium devices based on visionOS and Android XR, sales of headsets will be sluggish and developers will have no incentive to invest in the respective ecosystems, even if they would like to see alternative platforms and marketplaces.
