FACTS

Over the weekend, a VR developer expressed concern about the future of the VR industry, noting that VR visionaries like John Carmack and Palmer Luckey have left the industry.

Palmer Luckey responded to the X post and wrote:

"Wait till you see what I am announcing in a few weeks and see if you still think I am out of the game."

SPECULATION

What might Palmer Luckey announce?

Palmer Luckey confirmed last June that he was working on a new headset. On stage at Augmented World Expo 2024, Luckey said during a panel discussion:

"I'm still very much in the hardware space. I'm actually building a new headset right now. It's driven by military requirements, but it's also going to be used for non-military stuff, and it's really cool. It's really something."

It is not clear from Luckey's statement if he meant a personal project like the ModRetro Chromatic handheld or if the headset will be developed by his defense company Anduril Industries. Since Luckey talks about military requirements, the latter is probably the case, which means that the product will not be intended for consumers. A headset for military simulators, for 3D visualization of the battlefield or a device optimized for FPV drones would be conceivable.

Beyond that, nothing else is known about the headset, and there has been no news in this direction since last June.

Of course, Luckey could have changed his plans and meant something other than a headset in his X response. Also, take this teaser with a grain of salt, as the inventor has not always kept his word on VR announcements. We'll just have to wait and see.

A collaboration with Meta is also conceivable, as Luckey and Meta have recently reconciled.

Luckey founded the startup Oculus in 2012, which was acquired by Facebook two years later. In 2017, Luckey was fired from Facebook for political reasons. That same year, he founded Anduril Industries, which is now valued at $14 billion.
