3rd place: Contractors Showdown
Third place goes to the fast-paced battle royale shooter Contractors Showdown from Caveman Studio. As a fan of the genre, I was curious to see whether the hectic gameplay would be convincing in VR. And Contractors Showdown masters this challenge with flying colors.
Even the tutorial skillfully conveys the basics of movement and interaction. Thanks to my experience with classic battle royale titles, I quickly found my way around. The parachute jump at the start of each round is particularly successful. Gliding across the expansive map and aiming for the ideal landing point feels fantastic.
Despite initial difficulties, the intense firefights and fast pace of the game motivated me to try again and again. With practice, I learned to be more skillful and use my equipment effectively. Contractors Showdown also scores highly on Meta Quest 3 with its attractive visuals and smooth performance.
Thanks to constant updates and a dedicated community, Contractors Showdown promises long-term gaming fun. Anyone looking for a fast-paced, challenging multiplayer shooter for VR will find a first-class representative of the genre here.
2nd place: Underdogs
In second place is Underdogs from developer studio One Hamsa. This game completely captivated me and kept me enthralled for many hours. You take on the role of a mech pilot who fights his way through the post-apocalyptic streets of New Brakka and experiences the brutality of this world at first hand.
The battles in Underdogs are a sweat-inducing experience. You smash your opponents with powerful blows and mighty weapons. The more you throw yourself physically into the fray, the more effective your mech weighing tons will be. The intuitive controls quickly become second nature.
Between battles, the mech needs to be maintained and upgraded. This is where a captivating roguelike component comes into play. With the right combinations of weapons, tools and upgrades, you can prepare for the next challenge. Each run is unique and the choice of over 100 items means you are always faced with tricky decisions.
But Underdogs doesn't just shine with intense action. The "Sandboxxer" update added a powerful editor where you can create your own challenges and mini-games and share them with the community. The almost limitless creative possibilities guarantee long-lasting gaming fun. Whether it's explosive battles or tricky tests of skill - there are virtually no limits to your imagination.
Underdogs is rounded off by an incredibly dense atmosphere. The dark comic style, the driving soundtrack and the gripping story will inevitably cast a spell over you. Rarely has a VR game captivated and thrilled me so much. Underdogs is a must-have for every VR fan and receives my silver medal this year.
1st place: Ghosts of Tabor
The VR title of the year 2024 for me is undoubtedly the tactical extraction shooter Ghosts of Tabor by Combat Waffle Studios. As a self-confessed fan of games like Escape from Tarkov, I was incredibly excited about this ambitious VR project. And my high expectations were not disappointed - on the contrary.
Even the first exploration tour through the extensive bunker, which serves as the base, made me feel positive. Each room fulfills a specific function and can be expanded as the game progresses. This allows you to delve deeper and deeper into the fascinating game world and feel like a true mercenary in a post-apocalyptic world.
The missions in Ghosts of Tabor are incredibly intense. Careful preparation is the be-all and end-all. With a pounding heart, I stalk through dilapidated buildings, always on my guard against AI opponents and human adversaries. Every shot has to be right, because ammunition and healing resources are precious. A tactical approach and a steady hand are required here.
Ghosts of Tabor boasts outstanding gun play, atmospheric visuals and a motivating progression system. Thanks to extensive customization options, I was able to adapt the controls perfectly to my preferences. For me, Ghosts of Tabor is the best VR implementation of the extraction shooter principle and an absolute must-have for tactics fans.
Conclusion
I can highly recommend these games. But no matter what you play, the main thing is that you have fun immersing yourself in fascinating worlds, experiencing your favorite genres in a completely new way and being enchanted by the almost limitless possibilities of virtual reality. I'm already excited to see what VR hits await us in 2025. Until then, put on your headset and get into the adventure!
