Huge discounts see Playstation VR 2 sales soar — but Quest headsets still more popular
The 42% Black Friday discount on the Playstation VR 2 gave Sony a sales boost. Sales increased 20-fold.
This year's Black Friday discount on the Playstation VR 2 has led to a massive increase in sales. According to Road to VR, sales on Amazon US increased 20-fold compared to previous months.
Although the PSVR 2 bundle with Horizon Call of the Mountain is currently sold out there, it was temporarily sold at a record low price of $350 instead of $600 — a 42 percent discount.
It is worth noting that Sony is maintaining the discount even after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Sony is still offering the Playstation VR 2 for just $350 via its own sales platform — with or without Horizon Call of the Mountain.
The PS5, which is required to run the PSVR 2, is also available for less until 12 December ($374.99 instead of $449.99). The PSVR 2 promotion will run until 2 January 2025.
Quest headsets continue to gain ground
Despite the surge, the PSVR 2 still lags far behind the Meta Quest in Black Friday sales on Amazon US. According to Road to VR, Quest headsets sold around ten times as many. However, sales of Meta's VR headsets fell from around 170,000 to around 146,000 compared to last year.
Unlike last year, Meta's best-selling VR headset, the Quest 2, is no longer in the range. Instead, the company is marketing the entry-level Quest 3S headset, which was launched in October, with an aggressive pricing policy including free gifts, and has permanently lowered the price of the flagship Quest 3 model to $500.
PSVR 2: Discounts regularly lead to strong sales
Back in the summer, a PSVR 2 discount campaign in the US resulted in a remarkable spike in sales. According to The Shortcut, sales jumped 2,350 percent in 24 hours — more units sold in a single day than in the entire previous year.
Possible reasons for the aggressive pricing
The length of the current discount campaign and the size of the discount raise questions about Sony's strategy. The high price of the VR headset, which is generally more expensive than the PS5 itself, was previously considered one of the main obstacles to the product's success.
However, as the recent discounts show, there are still people interested in the rumbling VR headset. Sony could therefore further boost sales by cutting the price permanently.
It is also possible that Sony is planning to launch a new model or bundle and is looking to sell off remaining stock. The PSVR 1 has already seen a redesign about halfway through the product cycle. However, a complete production stop for the PSVR 2 is unlikely.
