What awaits you in Metro Awakening
Metro Awakening is a VR-exclusive prequel to the popular shooter series Metro 2033. In twelve chapters, the game takes you to the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro, which serves as a refuge for people after a devastating nuclear war.
The plot was penned by novelist Dmitry Glukhovsky and tells the story of doctor Serdar and his wife Yana, who have taken up residence in the Akademecheskaya metro station. Your task is to procure vital medication for Yana.
Convincing gunplay and a gripping end-time atmosphere
As we discovered in our review, developer Vertigo Games does an excellent job of translating the gunplay typical of the series and the oppressive end-time atmosphere into VR. The interactions with the game world and the gadgets work perfectly, the weapon handling is convincing and most of the battles feel intense.
Goosebump-inducing moments are provided by the successful play of light and shadow, creepy spiders and tight, claustrophobic locations. Incidentally, those who suffer from arachnophobia can breathe a sigh of relief: a recently released patch adds an arachnophobia mode that completely removes the creepy-crawlies from the game.
Graphically, the PSVR 2 version is also impressive. Overall, however, Metro Awakening offers a high-quality VR experience that will keep you entertained for around seven to nine hours at a good level.
