Meta quietly introduced a currency for Horizon Worlds
Meta recently introduced Meta Credits, a digital currency for virtual goods in its proto-metaverse Horizon Worlds.
Meta Credits have been introduced in the US, UK, and Canada in recent weeks without any announcement, as spotted by Road to VR.
Meta Credits can be purchased in Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest or with the mobile app Meta Horizon. 3 US dollars equals 300 Meta Credits. In addition, there are various bundles that provide bonus credits.
Meta Credits can be used to purchase premium in-app items for Horizon Worlds. Unlike Quest Cash, Meta Credits cannot be used to purchase hardware or accessories. Meta Credits also cannot be transferred to other accounts.

With the digital currency, Meta is taking the next step towards its metaverse economy. It is not clear from the available information whether and how creators can convert earned Meta Credits into real money.

Meta Credits and teenagers/preteens
Anyone over the age of 13 (depending on your region) can buy Meta Credits. Preteens (10-12 years old) need the permission of their parents in their Meta Account (see parent-controlled Meta accounts), if one is used (which we strongly recommend).
In April 2023, Meta announced that it would open Horizon Worlds to children and teens between the ages of 13 and 17 in the US and Canada. In August 2024, it was announced that preteens would follow, with worlds and events divided into age-appropriate classes. In a November 25, 2024 update, Meta writes that preteens in the US and Canada can now request access to Horizon Worlds through their parent-controlled Meta account and that the same functionality will soon roll out to all countries where Horizon Worlds is available.
My personal recommendation is to keep your children away from Metaverse apps, including Horizon Worlds, because they will be exposed to all kinds of unfiltered human behavior.
