FACTS

Varjo Teleport launches today. The service costs $30 per month and is available for both professional and individual users.

Teleport digitizes rooms or outdoor locations so that they can be explored with a PC VR headset. The locations are first scanned with a smartphone. Teleport then reconstructs the scene with accurate lighting, shading, textures, and reflections using Gaussian Splatting.

Varjo headsets and other OpenXR-based PC VR devices are supported. Alternatively, the digital duplicates can be viewed on a smartphone or PC monitor.

You can sign up for the service on the official website.

Varjo also announced a new funding round with new investors Beyond Capital, Nishikawa Communications and NVIDIA. The amount was not disclosed in the press release.

CONTEXT

Gaussian splatting: a promising technology

Varjo announced the service this summer.

The commercial launch was preceded by a beta period involving more than 2,000 professionals and businesses. Beta testers were able to capture locations in as little as 5-10 minutes, much faster than the hours or days required for traditional photogrammetry workflows, Varjo says.

Gaussian splatting is slowly making its way into the XR space. This year saw the launch of Gracia, a volumetric content platform using Gaussian Splats, which is also available for Meta Quest 3. Meta itself introduced Hyperscape in the fall, a VR app that streams previously scanned locations into Quest 3 via the cloud.

The basic idea is the same as with Varjo: one day it should be possible to capture real locations with a smartphone and turn them into walkable VR spaces.
