Phasmophobia studio has no plans for a Meta Quest version
The horror hit Phasmophobia will not be coming to Meta Quest, at least for now. Kinetic Games explains why in an interview.
In an interview with the website VideoGamer, Phasmophobia developer Ben Lavender says that although there is a great demand for a Quest version, the small team is very busy with supporting the existing platforms and does not have the resources for the optimizations that a Quest version would require.
"I think the biggest challenge for us in terms of supporting standalone hardware is what’s normally a quality thing is kind of relevant to our game mechanics. So, what I mean by that, is, like, the lights in the room like you can turn them on and off dynamically. So, that in itself makes the game quite expensive especially on a headset or a Switch or an older-gen PlayStation console or Xbox console", says Lavender.
VideoGamer also asked specifically about the Quest 3 version:
“To be honest, it’s not something we’ve looked at for the [Quest] 3 specifically because we’ve been very busy running around with everything else currently,” Lavender explains. “But, yes, you know, it might get to a point where it’s feasible to have on a standalone headset whether it’s the 3 whether it’s whatever is after that. But right now like with our team size being so small especially we don’t have a massive amount of hands to kind of go around and try these things, unfortunately.”
Senior Manager of Marketing and Partnerships, Asim Tanvir, added that the team is not ruling out a Quest 3 version or a standalone VR port in the future when the game is finished.
“We wouldn’t turn down or kind of say ‘no’ to an opportunity like that but we’d have to obviously make sure it falls within the right space for our team,” Tanvir revealed. “So, yeah, I mean, never say never… after 1.0 we might touch on it and have a look again.”
What is Phasmophobia?
Phasmophobia was originally released in 2020 for Steam with optional VR support. If you have a Meta Quest and a PC, you can play the PC VR version.
In Phasmophobia, up to four players act as paranormal investigators trying to identify ghosts in haunted locations. Using tools such as EMF readers and cameras, they gather evidence to determine the type of ghost from a list of over 20 different options.
Phasmophobia is also available for PS5, Playstation VR 2, and Xbox with cross-play support since October 29, 2024. The studio recently announced that it has sold 20 million units across all platforms.
