FACTS

According to Cyan's official patch notes, Myst has been updated to Unreal Engine 5.3.2. The update brings significant stability improvements and fixes flickering textures on weaker hardware.

One of the most important changes is the VR support: Myst switches to OpenXR as its technical base. According to Cyan, this should provide more stability and a more flexible environment for VR users. Instead of many different VR launch options, there is now only one option that should work with all officially supported VR headsets.

However, Cyan is dropping official support for some older VR headsets. This includes the original Oculus Rift, Meta Quest 1 (via link), the original HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets like the HP Reverb G2. However, the developers point out that the game can still run on these no longer officially supported devices thanks to OpenXR.

CONTEXT

From CD-ROM to Virtual Reality

Myst has come a long way since its original release in 1993. What was then a revolutionary CD-ROM game with pre-rendered still images is now a full-fledged VR experience. With an update in the summer of 2022, Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest 2 will even allow you to play the game completely with hand tracking.

With this update, Studio Cyan once again demonstrates its commitment to virtual reality. After Obduction (2016), the Myst remake (2020) and Firmament (2023), the studio recently released a remake of the Myst sequel Riven, which also features VR support. Riven was released for Meta Quest in June of this year and was optimized specifically for Quest 3.
