Flat2VR Studios' Trombone Champ: Unflattened is coming to Meta Quest in November
The quirky music game Trombone Champ will be released as a VR version for the Meta Quest in November. Flat2VR Studios promises over 50 songs, a campaign and lots of customization options.
Flat2VR Studios and Holy Wow Studios are bringing the BAFTA-nominated indie game Trombone Champ to the Meta Quest platform as a VR version on November 26th. Trombone Champ: Unflattened is available for pre-order now and includes the exclusive fish-themed "Sea Scale" trombone as a bonus instrument.
The original Trombone Champ became a viral hit thanks to its quirky humor and free gameplay. In Trombone Champ: Unflattened, you can now play the trombone in VR and play your way to the top of the leaderboards. Over 50 songs await you at the start, from classics to folk anthems. Play well and earn "Toots" that you can use to customize your trombone.
According to Flat2VR Studios, Trombone Champ: Unflattened is more than just a straight port. The gameplay has been optimized for VR and new features such as a multiplayer mode, a campaign, and a custom song mode have been added. There is even a mixed reality mode on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
Over 50 songs, creative freedom and a VR campaign
Trombone Champ: Unflattened offers the following features on release:
- Large selection: Over 50 songs from classical to funk with three difficulty levels and a simplified mode - all specially adapted for VR.
- Creative freedom: As a VR trombonist, you can shape the songs to your own style and play freely in improv mode. You have complete control over the music.
- Customizable instruments: Unlock different trombones with unique characteristics, sounds and animations - from the cat instrument to the pool noodle trombone.
- Custom songs: With the custom track editor, you can create your own songs, share them with friends and play their creations.
- New VR campaign: The campaign presents you with challenges that require rhythm, timing and creativity. Unlock hidden surprises as you master the toughest tasks.
- Dynamic stages: Play in a crowded concert hall where lighting and sound effects react dynamically to your performance. The audience cheers when you succeed and shows sympathy when you fail.
- Mixed Reality: On the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, you can merge your real environment with the VR concert in Mixed Reality mode.
A funny stroke of genius
I was able to play Trombone Champ: Unflattened at Gamescom 2024. My first impression: Flat2VR Studios has succeeded in transferring the cute graphic style and wit of the original game with all its charm to VR. The game feels like it was developed from the ground up for virtual reality.
Trombone Champ: Unflattened impressed me within the first few minutes: the detailed and absurdly pompous concert hall immediately casts a spell over you. The trombone playing itself is great fun thanks to the smooth movements, even if I could often hardly contain my laughter at my own tooting. At the same time, it is quite challenging to achieve high scores.
I'm sure that music and rhythm fans will have a great time with this absurdly funny VR treasure.
