XR hardware: News on VR, AR and mixed reality headsets
Meta develops ultra-light mixed reality headset
Meta's head of engineering confirmed this week that Meta is working on a mixed reality device in a goggle form factor. He was probably referring to a project codenamed “Puffin”. According to a report, the device will weigh less than 110 grams and is planned for 2027.
New images of the Meta Quest 3S have emerged
Shortly before the official launch on September 25, new images of the Meta Quest 3S have been released to the public. They show details such as a new action button and confirm the use of Fresnel lenses.
PS5 Pro improves the PSVR 2 experience
Sony unveiled the PS5 Pro and confirmed that the console is compatible with PlayStation VR 2 and will provide better graphics in VR games thanks to higher performance. Specific PSVR 2 titles with PS5 Pro enhancements have not yet been announced.
iPhone 16 supports Spatial Videos & Photos as standard
Apple is expanding support for Spatial Videos and Photos with the iPhone 16. All iPhone 16 models can record these immersive formats, which should contribute to further distribution and acceptance.
Meta has no interest in motion trackers
Meta's Head of Engineering Andrew Bosworth explained that the company is not currently working on its own motion trackers for Meta Quest. Pico's motion trackers would have to prove a success before Meta would develop its own trackers.

Berlin School of VR opens
The “Berlin School of VR”, an educational institution that aims to teach people how to use virtual reality safely, is opening in Berlin this week. The school offers courses and workshops in German and English.
XR-INTERACTION aims to strengthen the European XR industry
The XR-INTERACTION network pools the resources of around 60 German companies and research institutions to drive forward joint XR projects. The aim is to improve the competitiveness of the European XR industry.
Sandbox VR records strong growth
The VR arcade chain Sandbox VR is planning to open 280 new locations over the next four years. The company recently recorded growth of 60 percent in franchise agreements and sold over 1.2 million tickets in 2023.

Meta has introduced automatic display dimming for Quest headsets. The feature adjusts the display brightness to dark scenes, improving contrast and black levels. We have tried it out.
