Startup aims to deliver "multi-day battery" for mixed reality headsets
Startup Enovix is developing a high-performance battery for a "leader in the mixed reality market."
Founded in 2006, Enovix is a Silicon Valley startup using a proprietary architecture to develop 3D batteries with a higher energy density and cycle life. The company has facilities in India, South Korea and Malaysia.
In June, Enovix announced that it had signed an agreement with a leading California-based technology company to provide silicon batteries and packs for a mixed reality headset.
"We are thrilled to sign this agreement with a clear leader in the mixed reality market," said Samira Naraghi, Senior Vice President, Product, Enovix. "Devices in this market need to be light, fashionable, and safe while also supporting ‘always-on’ immersive experiences that leverage AI. Our high energy density batteries are uniquely suited to this task."
According to Enovix, the company uses a proprietary manufacturing process to replace graphite with a 100% active silicon anode to deliver leading energy density. Better batteries could allow headsets to last longer or be significantly lighter for the same battery life.
Who is Enovix's partner?
The battery is likely intended for Meta or Apple, as there are no other leading mixed reality headset manufacturers based in California.
In the press release, Enovix refers to a mid-June blog post by CEO Raj Talluri, in which Talluri praises the Apple Vision Pro. If Apple is indeed the partner, the battery could be for a cheaper version of the mixed reality headset, which is reportedly slated for a late 2025 launch.
In the blog post, Enovix's CEO writes: "What we need in order to fully realize the potential of mixed reality is a light, slim and safe battery with multi-day capacity."
The Apple Vision Pro external battery lasts 2 to 2.5 hours.
