Meta Quest finally gets a new window layout with v67 PTC

Meta is introducing a new, more flexible window layout for Quest in the latest PTC update. Videos show the experimental feature in action.

FACTS

The v67 PTC update is rolling out to test channel participants and includes a feature long requested by Quest users: the ability to place multiple windows freely and independently of each other in the surrounding space.

The first videos of the new window layout, which can be found under experimental features, have appeared on Reddit and X. Activation requires a reboot. Meta describes the feature in the settings as follows

"New Window Layout

Try the new layout, which allows you to grab and move windows freely in your space. You can also watch videos and other 2D content on a large screen."

The following video is from Reddit user u/pullRequest18.

The new window layout also appears to be coming to Quest 2. At least that's what one Reddit user confirms.

CONTEXT

What the new window layout does

VR enthusiast Luna has tried out the new feature, published a video and made first observations.

Apparently, in addition to the three docked windows, you can move at least three more windows freely around the room. The windows can be resized at the corners and all windows have a full-screen mode. In this mode, the background can be dimmed (only in a virtual environment, passthrough is not supported yet). You can also switch between a curved and a flat window. A permanent anchoring of the windows in your physical environment is apparently not possible (yet).

Meta's CTO teased the new window layout earlier this year and Meta is currently running commercials showing the new feature in mixed reality.
