The Light Brigade is exactly the PSVR 2 game I have been craving

The Light Brigade is a tense and challenging roguelite shooter that will motivate you for many hours.

The Playstation VR 2 is only a few weeks old and the number of games in the Playstation Store are very limited. The Light Brigade fills a gap and is, in my opinion, one of the best VR games you can buy for the system right now.

It offers short but rewarding play sessions, is challenging, and has a progression system that will keep me busy for weeks to come.

The Light Brigade is a roguelike shooter. You fight your way through procedurally generated levels with WWII weapons, but sooner or later you will fall. Gold and rank points can be used to upgrade weapons and abilities, and then you're thrown back into battle. Until you reach the end of the game.

Intensely realistic shootouts

I know this addictive game mechanic from other VR games like the excellent Until You Fall. The Light Brigade is very similar to this, but replaces swords and melee combat with guns and magical weapons.

I was expecting a wild and fast-paced shooter and was surprised at how challenging and tactical The Light Brigade plays. There are only a handful of enemies in the levels, but they hit dangerously well. If you're not careful, you'll be dead in mere seconds. Slow and deliberate movement is rewarded.

The first guns have small magazines and have to be reloaded manually. Fired bullets have to hit, also because of the lack of ammunition. Aiming is usually done through front and rear sights. All of this adds intensity, weight, and depth to the gunplay, and a realism I wasn't expecting.

Underwhelming graphics for PSVR 2

The Light Brigade combines the WW2 scenario with mysticism and magic. You can fold your hands and pray to indicate enemies and collectibles, and later even use magic spells.

I have by no means explored everything the game has to offer. For example, the different soldier classes that you can level up individually, which unlock additional play styles and add further variety to the gameplay.

One weakness of the game is the graphical presentation: The game was clearly developed with Meta Quest as the target platform and has only been slightly upgraded for Playstation VR 2. Low-contrast, foggy-gray levels dominate here as well, only in higher resolution and with nicer textures, particle and lighting effects. I also noticed a few graphical glitches like flickering textures or shadows.

The Light Brigade is a powerful and engaging game that doesn't suffer from the underwhelming graphics. On the other hand, it wouldn't have hurt if this world had been more visually appealing.
