Morrowind VR: Explore Vvardenfell with friends in virtual reality

You can now explore Vvardenfell with friends in virtual reality.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was released on May 1, 2002 and made role-playing history with its huge and detailed game world.

For the twentieth birthday of the classic, Morrowind modders are surprising fans with a gift: For the first time, the game is also playable in virtual reality in multiplayer.

Morrowind multiplayer mod has come a long way

The original offers neither a multiplayer mode nor support for virtual reality. The fact that Morrowind can be experienced together in VR is thanks to years of effort from the modding community.

The multiplayer mod is called TES3MP. It was made possible by another great project called OpenMW.

OpenMW is an open-source engine that replicates Morrowind's graphics engine. By accessing the engine code, the game can be modified and extended much more freely than Bethesda's original. This way, the modding community was able to integrate a proper multiplayer mode, among other things.

According to the project page, TES3MP is fully playable and offers extensive synchronization of players, NPCs, worlds and quests, as well as saving and loading saves.

The Morrowind VR mod created by Mads Buvik Sandvei also runs on OpenMW and was first released in 2020.

Now, the TES3MP team released version 0.8.1 of the multiplayer mod, which is compatible with the VR mod for the first time. TES3MP supports crossplay out of the box. This means that VR and monitor players can play together.

The hand movements of VR players are currently not visible; instead, the normal animations serve as placeholders. Spells and ranged weapons, on the other hand, are correctly synchronized with VR movements.

TES3MP is available in two versions: a client and a server version. The download links can be found in the Steam announcement. On the GitHub page of TES3MP there is more information, including a Quick Start Guide and a link to the Discord server. Sandvei's VR mod can be found on GitLab. There you will also find an installation guide.
