Barbie goes Virtual Reality — as DLC for a popular VR hit
Mattel and Kluge Interactive bring Barbie to virtual reality: In the new Synth Riders DLC, you can dance to K-Pop hits from the Barbie movie.
Mattel and Kluge Interactive today released "Synth Riders Experience — Barbie Dance 'n Dream", a new DLC for the VR rhythm game Synth Riders. As announced by Mattel, you can dance to the K-Pop hit "Barbie Dreams (ft. Kaliii)" by FIFTY FIFTY from the Barbie movie.
The DLC is now available for Meta Quest, Steam VR and PlayStation VR 2 at a price of €2.99. The DLC will not be available for the Pico version of Synth Riders. Apple Vision Pro users with an Apple Arcade subscription will receive the content at no additional cost.
Don't miss out: in the MIXED Advent Calendar, you can win VR games or VR accessories every day.
According to Erika Winterholler, Head of Business Development at Mattel Digital Gaming, the DLC offers fans a new way to experience the Barbie universe. Players will be able to dance in a dream world in different locations such as a roller disco and the beach.
A special feature is the mixed reality mode, which is available on Meta Quest 3/3S and Apple Vision Pro. A Barbie box opens as a portal and connects the virtual Barbie world with the player's real environment.
Synth Riders becomes a live service game
Synth Riders has become one of the most successful VR rhythm games since its launch in 2018. The game is available on all major VR and XR platforms and was even nominated as a finalist for the Apple Design Award.
The game catalog now includes over 70 licensed songs from artists such as Bruno Mars, Lindsay Stirling, Gorillaz, Muse and a-ha. Developer Kluge Interactive is continuously expanding the game and regularly adds new content.
Just recently, an "80s Mixtape - Side A" DLC was released with hits from a-ha, DEVO, Starship, Phil Collins and INXS. In addition, an update in October 2024 introduced a mixed reality mode in which the game elements enter the player's real environment through a portal.
According to Arturo Perez, CEO of Kluge Interactive, Barbie is the first non-music brand in Synth Riders. This allows the studio to explore a legendary brand and bring its magic to players in a new way.
