Meta Quest 3 has received a GPU boost we didn't know about

Meta has quietly increased the maximum GPU clock speed of Quest 3, which also benefits the new Quest 3S.

FACTS

A few months ago, Meta released a firmware update that increased the maximum GPU clock speed of the Quest 3, UploadVR reports:

  • from 545 Mhz to 599 Mhz in Default Mode (about 10 percent more) and
  • from 599 Mhz to 640 Mhz in Favor GPU Mode (about 7 percent more).

The Favor GPU Mode trades 16% of the maximum CPU clock speed for additional GPU performance.

Only applications that use Dynamic Resolution will benefit from the higher GPU clock speed limit. This feature reduces or increases resolution based on processor utilization and heat generation. The additional performance may or may not result in a higher resolution than before.

Quest 3S also benefits from the higher GPU clock speed limit, as Quest 3 and Quest 3S use the same chipset.

CONTEXT

Quest 2 and Quest Pro also received performance boosts in the past

Meta Quest 2 has also received a performance boost in the past, twice in fact.

In December 2022, Meta increased the maximum GPU clock speed of Quest 2 by 7 percent and the following summer, the CPU and GPU received a further boost of 26 and 19 percent respectively. Quest Pro also benefited.

In the case of Quest 3, however, Meta remained silent.

The fact that Meta does not increase the maximum clock speed until months or years after a device has been released is due to prudence. Meta evaluates statistical data on processor load and heat generation of Quest devices and increases the maximum clock speed when it sees room for improvement.

It is therefore quite possible that Meta Quest 3 and 3S will receive further performance enhancements over the course of their lifetime. Anyone who uses tools like the Quest Games Optimizer knows how much (often unused) power there is in the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.
