Meta Quest 3: VR board game hit Chess Club gets a mixed reality mode
Odders Lab releases a free mixed reality extension for Chess Club on Meta Quest 3 and lowers the price permanently.
The Spanish development studio Odders Lab is releasing a mixed reality expansion for its popular VR chess game Chess Club just in time for World Chess Day on July 20. At the same time, the price of the game will be permanently reduced from $14.99 to $9.99.
The free update allows players to play chess in four different virtual environments or in their real-life surroundings. The VR locations include a Grand Palace, Stonehenge, an Escher Dream and a Master Garden.
Chess Club supports both hand tracking and controller control. You can play against friends, AI opponents of various difficulty levels, or online against other chess enthusiasts.
From VR chess to mixed reality app
According to Odders Lab, Chess Club is the leading chess game in the meta and pico stores. For the game's third anniversary last month, the studio had already implemented a 90 percent price reduction, making Chess Club a top seller. For Odders Lab, Chess Club has played a key role in the studio's growth and success in the XR games industry.
MIXED has already reviewed Chess Club (only in German) in 2021. At the time, Ben praised the detailed pieces and the "lively" game board, but criticized the lack of setting options and shortcomings in matchmaking. Since the VR version was released three years ago, however, Odders Lab has continuously improved the game and integrated hand tracking, voice control, multiplayer modes, new avatars, lip-sync and motion capture, among other things.
In addition to Chess Club, Odders Lab has also developed other successful XR titles such as OhShape and the officially licensed fitness apps Les Mills XR Bodycombat and Les Mills XR Dance.
