Samsung's answer to Apple Vision Pro is coming this year
UPDATEAccording to a report from Business Insider (see source below), the current release plans for the mixed reality headset are as follows.
- October 2024: Launch of developer version
- March 2025: Launch of consumer version
Samsung said at the Galaxy Unpacked event that its mixed reality headset, developed with Google, will be released later this year.
Samsung's President and Head of Mobile Experience Business TM Roh spoke on stage about the "new XR platform coming this year", while Google's Senior Vice President of Platforms and Devices Rick Osterloh stated that Google is still involved in the project.
These statements coincide with a report from South Korean website JoongAng that the headset will be unveiled in the second half of 2024 and come to market in December 2024.
Samsung prepares a competitor to Apple Vision Pro
Samsung announced a headset partnership with Google and Qualcomm in early 2023. Samsung will design and manufacture, Google will provide an Android-based XR operating system, and Qualcomm will provide the chipset. We now know that it will be a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, a higher clocked version of the chipset used in Meta Quest 3 that supports 4.3K displays per eye.
The unnamed headset is expected to be a response to Apple's Vision Pro. However, since sales of expensive headsets are sluggish, Samsung and Google are not under much pressure. According to JoongAng's report, only 30,000 units will be produced in the first production run.
