FACTS

Game Informer spoke with game director Keisuke Yamakawa and producer Masato Kumazawa, who were leading the development of Resident Evil 4's VR mode.

Kumazawa didn't go into details, but said they "plan to undertake more challenges in the future."

Yamakawa is a VR enthusiast and worked on the VR version of Resident Evil 7 for the first Playstation VR. He believes that VR and Resident Evil go well together and would like to see VR become more popular.

"Since headsets can still be quite expensive and heavy, I would love for the kits to continue getting lighter and more affordable to make it more [approachable] to the general audience," says Yamakawa, who joined the project as a director because of his enthusiasm for VR.

CONTEXT

The Resident Evil VR modes are still one of the best experiences PSVR 2 has to offer

Capcom has brought three Resident Evil games to VR so far: Resident Evil 7 (2017), Resident Evil Village (2023), and Resident Evil 4 (2023). All three VR modes were released exclusively for Sony's VR platform, and the latter two are among the VR experiences for Playstation VR 2. Resident Evil 4, which is available for Meta Quest, was developed by Armature and not Capcom.

According to Capcom's own statistics, nearly 125,000 PSVR 2 players have played Resident Evil 4's VR mode (as of July 2024). It was released as free DLC in early December 2023, almost exactly 7 months ago.

It is not known if Capcom funded the development of the VR modes for Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 out of its pocket, or if Sony contributed to the VR ports.
