Meta, Epic Games and Unity join the Alliance for OpenUSD

Twelve major technology companies joined the Alliance for OpenUSD to promote Universal Scene Description as an open standard.

The Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), an organization dedicated to the standardization and development of 3D technology “Universal Scene Description”, has unveiled its roadmap and announced the collaboration of twelve new members.

The HTML of the Metaverse

OpenUSD is a high-performance 3D scene description technology developed by Pixar that enables robust interoperability between tools, data, and workflows.

Founded in August 2023, the AOUSD aims to establish OpenUSD as an international, cross-industry standard with written specifications.

Founding members include Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and Nvidia, who refer to OpenUSD as the “HTML of the metaverse”.

AOUSD announces new members

According to the AOUSD, the resulting demand for interoperability in 3D workflows has sparked interest in the alliance across multiple industries and led to significant growth.

In addition, the AOUSD has announced a new relationship with the Khronos Group to improve support through the exchange of ideas and assistance.

Roadmap announced

In addition to welcoming the new members, the Alliance has also published a two-year roadmap. The AOUSD Core Specification Working Group will first define the fundamentals of OpenUSD to specify how low-level data is structured and interpreted.

This will ensure portability and interoperability across software platforms and devices. The core specifications are expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
