Competition for Apple Vision Pro: Xreal Air sales increase

The startup's CEO cites the Xreal Air's slim form factor as the main reason for rising sales and sees spatial computing as a megatrend.

Chinese startup Xreal is reporting soaring sales. Since the launch of the Xreal Air in August 2022, the slim tech headset has already sold more than 100,000 units.

"Right now, 200 percent, 300 percent growth, it should be the norm.”  co-founder Peng Jin said. “I think it’s very encouraging that people are accepting this new form factor, they are accepting this new experience.". Jin is confident that the company will soon crack the 200,000 mark.

Xreal Air: Competition for Apple?

Released as Nreal Air, the tech glasses weigh just 77 grams and are almost indistinguishable from regular sunglasses. The AR headset has recently been renamed "Xreal Air". After a legal dispute with Epic, Nreal had to change the company name and is now called Xreal.

While Xreal is euphorically announcing rising sales figures, Apple is reportedly scaling back production numbers. Due to production problems with the Apple Vision Pro, the number of units originally planned for 2024 will be reduced from one million to 400,000.

Xreal CEO: Spatial computing is the future

Compared to the nearly $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, the Xreal Air is a steal at $379. While the two devices are vastly different in terms of technology and performance, they are playing in the same market: spatial computing.

"We do see spatial computing as the major technological trend in the next maybe two, three decades," Jin said. The Xreal Air is currently designed primarily for entertainment purposes, and has had initial success as a Steam Deck accessory.

Users still need to pair the AR headset with a smartphone or laptop as a feed device. Wireless streaming will also be possible with the previously announced "Xreal Beam" accessory.
