Meta Quest 2: Assassin's Creed VR is almost done - report
There are new rumors about Assassin's Creed Nexus, which is supposed to be released in September. The release could be timed with the launch of Quest 3.
This is reported by the well-informed game journalist Tom Henderson for the website Insider Gaming. Henderson had leaked the first details about the upcoming VR game last April.
According to the journalist, the VR spin-off will be called Assassin's Creed Nexus and will bring back several characters from previous installments. VR players would slip into the soles of Ezio, Cassandra, Connor and Haytham in various levels.
Nexus should bring everything you'd expect from an Assassin's Creed: sneaking, pickpocketing, lock picking, fighting, climbing, and the fabulous "Leap of Faith," which Henderson says is particularly well done.
Dropping from a building into a haystack with your arms outstretched is a "really cool experience," wrote Henderson, who said he's tried the VR game himself.
Assassin's Creed Nexus: No longer an exclusive title?
The Assassin's Creed VR spin-off was announced along with a Splinter Cell project in the fall of 2020. Both titles are contract work and were to be released exclusively for Meta Quest. In July, it was announced that Ubisoft had cancelled development on Splinter Cell VR. Now, Henderson has news about Assassin's Creed Nexus.
"However, in recent weeks, Insider Gaming understands that the deal has apparently been terminated amid the ongoing budget cuts at Meta. It’s understood that Ubisoft can now publish the game across any VR platforms it desires, but it likely won’t due to the deal being cut well into the games development cycle."
Ubisoft reportedly already discussing "Nexus 2"
Insider Gaming goes on to say that Ubisoft is expecting a big hit and that they are already discussing a sequel internally.
"Understandably, it’s still early days, but this would imply that Ubisoft aims to release the sequel across multiple VR headsets in the future," the report reads. Insider Gaming doesn't mention any devices, but a good possibility would be the Playstation VR 2.
The first part is expected to be revealed in June. Assassin's Creed Nexus will be released in September 2023.
Meta Quest 3 should be released in the same timeframe. A VR spin-off from the powerhouse gaming brand could help boost sales of the headset if it is also a quality title.
