FACTS

The developers of Wall Town Wonders announce the release of a free Christmas update for their mixed reality game. The update is available now and marks the start of several planned free seasonal expansions.

The focus is on a new Christmas questline where you can earn an unlockable snowman as a permanent trophy for your room. Please note, however, that this special quest is only available during the Christmas period.

You can also expect new winter mini-games such as ice skating, snowball fights, gift stealing by ninjas, a diving mini-game, Christmas tree firefighting and gift cart races. You can also customize your cities with new Christmas character and vehicle skins, including a gingerbread plane and a festive balloon.

The update also includes some gameplay improvements:

  • A new trading system to swap resources
  • Closer placement of buildings for more flexibility
  • New tooltips for more intuitive navigation
  • Clearer displays for building upgrades
  • Improved translations into Dutch, Chinese and Spanish
  • General stability and user-friendliness optimizations
CONTEXT

Wall Town Wonders: Enchanting ideas, expandable implementation

In our hands-on, we found that Wall Town Wonders shines with its creative use of mixed reality. The interactions between the game, player:in and the environment provide magical moments time and again. Unfortunately, the construction gameplay falls somewhat short of expectations and focuses on simplicity rather than depth.

Wall Town Wonders presents itself as a charming “mixed reality wonder bag” with great approaches, but also weaknesses in its implementation. For example, the voice acting of the characters could be improved, and some interactions could be more intuitive. Nevertheless, the developers deserve praise for their courage in exploring the limits of what is possible with mixed reality.

Anyone looking for relaxed building entertainment with a pinch of mixed reality can pick it up. However, city-building professionals will not be sufficiently challenged.
