VR flight simulation Aces of Thunder looks fantastic in new trailer
The VR flight simulation Aces of Thunder will include aircraft from the Second World War as well as faithfully reproduced models from the First World War.
Gaijin Entertainment is adding World War I aircraft to its VR flight simulator Aces of Thunder. The latest trailer shows players will be able to fly iconic planes like the Fokker Dr.I and SPAD S.XIII alongside the game's World War II collection.
History buffs will recognize the Fokker Dr.I as the aircraft of German ace Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron, while the SPAD S.XIII carried Allied ace René Fonck into battle. The game recreates both planes with authentic cockpits, period-accurate weapons, and true-to-life flight characteristics.
Players can choose from more than 20 carefully recreated aircraft spanning both world wars. The roster includes American fighters like the P-51 Mustang and P-63 Kingcobra, German warbirds such as the Bf 109 and Fw 190, and other classics like the Soviet IL-2, British Spitfire, and Japanese A6M3 Zero.
The game launches later this year for Playstation VR 2 and PC VR through Steam, though exact timing and pricing remain under wraps.
Realistic aerial combat in VR
The game puts players directly in the cockpit for realistic aerial combat. Gaijin says they built the physics-based flight and damage systems using technology from their War Thunder military game. Each plane's controls aim to balance historical accuracy with comfortable VR gameplay.
Players can dive into online multiplayer with team battles and one-on-one dogfights, or tackle the single-player campaign. The action unfolds across 15 maps covering major World War II battlegrounds on the Western, Eastern and Pacific fronts.
While Aces of Thunder started as a Playstation VR 2 exclusive and was nearly finished in late 2023, Gaijin later announced a PC VR version for Steam. The team recently pushed the release from late 2024 to 2025, saying they needed more time to add content and improve performance.
